Northbourne Youth Initiative Family day out!

It’s the half term holidays and as usual Northbourne Youth Initiative like to put on an activity to relieve the boredom, get out of Elswick for a little bit and give you the chance to go somewhere new and interesting.  This time we’ve invited family, neighbours and young people along to all take part together.  Yesterday we took a trip to Edinburgh. It was cold, snowy and busy! There were lots to see and do both on the bus and in the city.

Our first stop was the National museum of Scotland, not only was it good to be out of the freezing cold but there was so much to do in there, and something which interested almost everyone.  Youth Workers knew they would find many of the young ones in the science and explore area, where they could have hands on experience and see mechanics of the trains, cars and space rockets.  It was great to see the families having this time to spend together and share this experience.

The museum also offered fashion, animals, space, history and much more, so people could spend all day in there if they liked.  After the museum it was for the families to spend quality time together and explore the city, armed with maps and scavenger hunts the families set off on their own.  With lots of choice for shopping and coffee and snacks along the way everyone filled in their day and even asked for longer next time to spend exploring.

On the way home we looked at what Northbourne Youth Initiative could do next for families and the community.  We had some great ideas coming from the young people, youth workers and families.  Lots of really positive feedback on the day, sorry we couldn’t make it any warmer for you! Ideas included Blackpool & Beamish were popular choices, along with other seaside resorts and chocolate making.  So the youth workers are off to plan something for Easter half term.  So if you have any ideas you want to add get in touch via the website, Facebook, pop in, give us a call…whatever suits you best.
